Eyeglass frames come in a variety of materials.  The following is a brief description of some of the materials available.

Titanium

This material has the advantage of being lightweight, durable, strong and corrosion-resistant.  Titanium comes in a variety of colors.  Sometimes manufacturers combine titanium with nickel or copper.  If you are allergic to nickel, you want to look for a frame that is 100% titanium.  Titanium frames tend to be a little more expensive due to the manufacturing process.

Flexon

This material is patented by the manufacturer Marchon.  It is a titanium-base alloy with nickel.  It is a unique material that "remembers" its original shape if bent.  It is lightweight and non-corrosive.  If you are a little hard on frames, this may be the option for you.

Beryllium

This material is a lower cost alternative to titanium.  It resists corrosion and tarnish.  It is an excellent choice for people with high skin acidity or people who spend time around salt water.  It is lightweight, strong and flexible.

Stainless Steel

This material is a combination of stainless steel and chromium.  It is lightweight, has low toxicity and is nickel-free for people who are allergic to nickel.  It is one of the newer frame materials that is not as familiar to people as titanium.

Zyl (plastic or cellulose acetate)

This material is making a comeback.  It is very cost-effective and comes in many styles and colors.  It is a good material for people that have metal allergies.  One of the most popular styles now is the multi-colored, layered frame.  One drawback with plastic material is that aging and exposure to sunlight can slightly decrease its strength.
