Lens Types and Lens Coatings

There are many types of lens material available.  There are materials that range from lenses that can thin out a stronger prescription to change different colors when you go from indoors to outdoors.

Plastic or CR-39

This material can be used for any prescription, although higher prescriptions can be a little thicker.  It can be tinted any color or have any lens coating applied to it.

Polycarbonate

This material is an impact-resistant material.  It is recommended for children's glasses, safety eyewear and for people who play impact sports like racquetball.  It tends to give lenses a lightly thinner look and is slightly lighter than plastic lenses.

High Index Material

This material is a thinner, lightweight plastic especially for people with higher prescriptions.  There are several different types to choose from, so talk to your optician about which type will work best for your prescription.

Changeable Tints

There are lens materials that can change color when you go from indoors to outdoors.  This material provides you with two pair of glasses in on clearer lens- indoor and sunglasses outdoors.  They can come in two types of materials, glass or plastic.  They can come in a variety of tints, from gray to green or purple.  If you would like more information about these colored lenses, go to http://www.sola.com.

Glass

This material is usually used for its excellent ability to change tint when going from the indoors to outdoors.  It is also good for its ability not to scratch easily.  It does make a lens more heavy than other materials an it is not as shatter resistant as the other materials.
